The Murry Foundation joins Hands with CSAPA

BRIEF HISTORY
Early summer, 2007, The Murry Foundation contacted the China Small Animal Protection Association (CSAPA) to join the fight against animal cruelty in China. There is no law in China against killing dogs and cats, or the methods used, and most animal traders are licensed meaning that the eradication of this practise is very difficult indeed. Mao Guan and JJ Adams, representing The Murry Foundation, leave for China in November 07 to strengthen the relationship between the two organisations and to structure a plan to move further forward and allocate future funding from the Foundation to where it is needed most. The Murry Foundation intend to invest monies into this area alongside the CSAPA to develop new sanctuaries and hospitals, with a further view to invest in orphan schools and education in 2008.

Last November, 500 CSAPA members in Beijing staged a noisy demonstration against a police cull of dogs and new limits on pet.
In the latest confrontation, 100 supporters of the “Love Kitty” group (members of the CSAPA in Tianjin) surrounded a market, where cats and dogs were being horrifically slaughtered. Many of the protesters were local people who had lost their pets and suspected the animals had been abducted by furriers.
Lu Di, director of the Small Animal Protection Association, described the confrontation that followed: “The demonstrators were afraid that the killings were continuing behind closed doors so they made their way inside. They found cats crammed inside tiny wire cages about 10 cm high. About 80 police officers arrived and there were scuffles. One man suffered a head injury and is still in hospital.”

“We don’t have enough money, food or medical care so we are calling for help,” said Lu.
