01.10.08. Rebuilding Rumangabo School for the Future Gorilla Guardians

The reconstruction of the primary school at Virunga HQ is underway to provide a better education for Virunga’s children.

One of the primary reasons for the demise of the gorilla population is human intrusion. The gorillas have often been caught in the middle of conflict and sacrificed as pawns of a war between humans. The Congo suffers from significant civil unrest with little understanding of the environment or of rival factions.

The Murry Foundation believes that the long term security of the Gorillas can only be established if the generations of tomorrow are educated, finding peace with each other and an understanding of the wealth of the natural environment.

These children, the future guardians of the mountain gorillas deserve better.

For this reason The Murry Foundation has instigated a program to re-establish formal education in the local area by re-developing the infrastructure of a school.

Location

Rumangabo – the headquarters of Virunga National Park, established in 1925, located 45km north of Goma. The site of the proposed school is within the park, a stone’s throw from the main park station building at Rumangabo.

The school will house the future protectors of Virunga National Park and the mountain Gorillas. Education is essential in the maintenance of these creatures and the wider environment.

The construction of these buildings will not only provide hope for the Gorillas but will also improve hygiene standards for the young children who will attend the newly constructed school.

If we want future generations to protect the park and the mountain gorillas, we must provide good conditions at school and opportunities to learn about conservation.

The school will house 600 children.
