Ndeze and Ndakasi relax in their new home.
As part of our ongoing commitment to the Senkwekwe Centre Gorilla Orphanage in DR Congo, we are now in a position to launch a sponsor a gorilla program. The program will run in partnership with Gearing up 4 gorillas and Gorilla CD, the official blog from Virunga National Park. You can choose to sponsor Ndakasi or Ndeze.

Ndakasi
In June 2007, Ndakasi's mother Nsekuye, was shot execution style in the back of the head, for no apparant reason. Nsekuye was the largest female in the Kabrizi mountain gorilla family, Nadakasi at between just 8-12 weeks of age, was found still clinging to her dead mother. Ndakasi survived against all the odds, thanks to the dedicated staff of Virunga National Park and a few weeks ago had her 3rd birthday!

Ndeze
Ndeze was orphaned on July 22nd 2007. when her mother Safari was shot dead, along with other member of the Rugendo family. The slaughter of so many of this famous mountain gorilla familt shocked the world. Ndeze's father Senkwekwe, the leader of the Rugendo family was also slaughtered. Little Ndeze was scooped up by one of her brothers, Kongomani and carried away to "safety" with the terrified surving family members. After very careful planning and tracking, the gorilla doctors and rangers managed to find and take 5 month old Ndeze to Goma for hand rearing.

Ndeze and Ndakasi up to mischief together!
Ndeze and Ndakasi have grown up together, being hand reared by careers in Goma. The first phase of the Senkwekwe Centre (named after Ndez's father) was completed late last year and there were many celebrations when the baby orphans were finally moved into their new home. The Murry Foundation are proud to have financed the cost of building the first phase of the Senkwekwe Centre at the cost of £77,000.
